Talented Ten

Team Name: Talented Ten

IDEAS Project Pitch: Creating a strong community from a group of individuals requires intentional strategic efforts and a wealth of perspective on the past and present. MIT students found at the intersection of two minority groups on campus, black women, have long been dismal in numbers at MIT. Although there have been efforts to increase the matriculation of black students at MIT broadly, there has been no publicly recorded initiative designed explicitly to bring black women to MIT until Talented Ten. Our program matches ten juniors in high school who identify as both black and women to current minority students at MIT. The MIT students will act as mentors to the high school students as they guide them through the MIT admissions process and host them on an all-expense paid fly in to MIT. Given the small number of black females at MIT, the success of this program could result in a 30% increase in the number of black females at MIT for the Class of 2024.
